- UBC-VANCOUVER FULL-TIME PHD MINIMUM FUNDING POLICY EFFECTIVE SEPTEMBER 2026: Every admitted AND ENROLLED full-time Vancouver PhD student, including international PhD in English students from Ghana, is eligible for a guaranteed MINIMUM PACKAGE OF CAD $40,000 PER YEAR during each of the first FOUR PhD YEARS (at least CAD $160,000 gross package across four years, assuming continuing eligibility and satisfactory progress). This is NOT a separate cash stipend and NOT an automatic FULL TUITION WAIVER or unconditional extra CAD $40k after tuition. The funding package is calculated BEFORE subtracting tuition and fees and can be a COMBINATION of internal or external academic scholarships, teaching assistantships, research assistantships, graduate academic assistantships, and approved research-related earnings. Students may be expected to work for the assistantship portions. UBC award payments may be automatically APPLIED TO TUITION AND STUDENT FEES FIRST, and only the remaining balance paid to the student. Exact after-fee living budget varies by offer and annual tuition changes. THE 2027 FULL-TIME PHD IN ENGLISH PROGRAMME'S OFFICIAL LISTED CURRENT INTERNATIONAL TUITION IS AROUND CAD $10,081.65 PER YEAR BEFORE ANNUAL INCREASES, PLUS APPROXIMATELY CAD $1,203.20 STUDENT FEES; these are historical/current figures, NOT guaranteed 2027–28 prices. Eligible research-based INTERNATIONAL students may receive a separate INTERNATIONAL TUITION AWARD of UP TO CAD $3,200/year (against tuition); it is not an automatic total fee waiver and is EXCLUDED from UBC's $40,000 minimum funding calculation. Some students may instead receive competitive fellowships with a tuition contribution or full fee coverage according to their individual award terms. Applicants should REQUEST A WRITTEN ITEMIZED FUNDING OFFER to know net tuition, fees and anticipated spendable support. UBC offers competitive FOUR YEAR DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS as a DISTINCT POSSIBLE AWARD (e.g. stipend/tuition components) but NOT all PhD admissions receive that separately or on top of the $40,000 minimum. Do not double-count this fellowship as guaranteed additional funding. No separately confirmed accommodation stipend, flights, visas, immigration-related expenses or health-insurance reimbursement is universally guaranteed. International GRADUATE APPLICATION FEE is CAD $168.25 (current 2026/27 listed figure); it is not generally included in funding. A UBC application fee waiver is limited to citizenship AND correspondence address in one of the United Nations' least-developed countries (plus a narrow BC senior resident rule). Ghana is NOT on the UN least-developed-country list, so most Ghana-based Ghanaian applicants should expect to PAY the application fee. Funding beyond PhD year FOUR is not guaranteed under the minimum policy; standard PhD completion may take more than four years. MAIN APPLICATION AND ALL SUPPORTING MATERIALS EXCEPT REFERENCES: WEDNESDAY 6 JANUARY 2027 at 11:59 PM PACIFIC STANDARD TIME, Vancouver (America/Vancouver, PST / UTC−08:00). THREE ACADEMIC RECOMMENDATION LETTERS: Must arrive by SUNDAY 10 JANUARY 2027 at 11:59 PM PST (the university's separate REFEREE deadline). Do not tell doctoral applicants to wait until January 10 for their own application or transcripts. The separate 1 DECEMBER 2026 SSHRC Master's deadline described on this page is NOT the PhD English admission deadline. There is NO separate scholarship application needed to be considered for the UBC English doctoral programme's guaranteed first-four-years minimum funding: the departmental page says applying for admission also provides financial-aid consideration. Supplementary external scholarships or individual fellowship applications may require their own steps.
